Going through a divorce can be one of the most challenging times of your life. There are so many emotions involved, including hurt, anger, grief, anxiety, fear, etc. There are so many unknowns and you may feel completely overwhelmed at the turmoil and upheaval caused by splitting up. Your friends and family may have their own opinions of what steps you should take, and, while very well-meaning, they may have certain biases and may not know all of the specifics of your situation. This means that their advice may not be what is best for you. In some cases, they may even be fueling the fire and actually escalating the negativity and the potential court battle, by the advice that they provide. Sometimes, they can create even more confusion for you, in an already confusing and complicated situation.
You will absolutely need a shoulder to lean on/someone to vent to, but it may be difficult to share certain details with friends and family. A divorce coach can be a partner that you can lean on throughout the divorce process. They can listen to you vent in moments of difficulty; they can offer you a sense of calm and peace when your life seems like it is upside down; they can provide you with an objective view of your situation and the options available to you. You can speak freely with them without fear of judgement and about details that you may not feel comfortable discussing with friends or family. A divorce coach does not provide legal advice, but can help you navigate through your divorce with a sense of feeling supported, empowered and knowledgeable about the demands and challenges that lie ahead of you both during and after the divorce.
Remember, that while your lawyer is skilled at dealing with the legal aspects of your divorce, it is not his/her job to support you emotionally during this difficult time. Calling or emailing them to vent, as opposed to contacting them simply to complete a legal document/process or provide legal advice, can add thousands of dollars unnecessarily to an already costly process. A divorce coach, on the other hand, will cost much less per hour, and may be able to help you rein in your emotions, in order to move forward with the divorce more strategically and with less negativity. Obtaining the help of a divorce coach can actually help you reduce your overall legal costs by helping you calm the storm.
